My little guy’s Scales & Stripes: Go Fish Party can now be seen on the pages of Parents Magazine! Hooray for the April Issue. I am also super excited to say that: inspired by this interest in the birthday parties for my little one, I will soon be offering sets to help you get the party started too.

March is My Month

I love to open a Google Analytics Alert to find a sweet blog post on something I hold dear to my heart. Thank you Kathya of CHOCOLOCATERIA! March is my month too! And you reminded me that I wanted to write an in depth post about each month explaining the inspiration behind each composition this year. I guess I need to get started.

Conference Calling

I am so honored and excited to be invited as a guest speaker on a panel at the first ever Ladies of Letterpress Conference! I get to go home to the southland, visit my Granny Lou, eat at some fave restaurants, immerse myself in ink and type and iron, rub elbows with heroes, meet friends I have only known online, and BE amongst my letterpress tribe. That’s not even the half of it.

Hooray for Jessica & Kseniya for bringing the greater letterpress community together. Ladies of Letterpress is a professional organization that provides a community where both brand-new and experienced printers can learn from one another, share resources and ideas, and help keep letterpress a thriving, exciting, multifaceted art and craft. We have sparked a similar fire here in Colorado with Boulder, Inspired. – a series of creative conversations inspiring community and collaboration among creatives.

I am loving the community & collaboration theme of my life right now. I feel connected to my craft, and grounded in my path.

Year of the Rabbit!

According to the Chinese Zodiac, the Year of the Golden Rabbit, begins today February 3, 2011 and ends on January 22, 2012.  The Rabbit is the fourth sign of the Chinese Zodiac.

According to Chinese tradition, the Rabbit brings a year in which you can catch your breath and calm your nerves.  I like the sound of that! To gain the greatest benefits from this time, focus on home, family, security, diplomacy, and your relationships with women and children. Make it a goal to create a safe, peaceful lifestyle. I couldn’t have written a better New Year resolution myself.

The Rabbit is the symbol of the Moon, while the Peacock is the symbol of the Sun, and that together, these two animal signs signify the start of day and night, represent the Yin and Yang of life.  It is said that in the Year of the Rabbit, the wish-granting aspect of the Sun and the Moon combined is multiplied.  The Moon is YIN and this is the Yin of Heaven, signifying magic.  On each of the Full Moon nights of this year, it is advised that you go out into your garden to gaze into the Full Moon and visualize Moon glow flowing into you, filling your whole body with bright white light and granting you fearlessness, love and courage.  This will not only strengthen your inner Chi energy, it will also bring wisdom into your life.

Always curious about other cultures traditions, I am especially intrigued by the Chinese New Year this year as I was born a Wood Rabbit, and my mom is the Metal Rabbit – so this really is her year! We are supposed to be creative and wildly ambitious. I’ll take it. For the past four years, I have been excited to visit the Post Office around this time to see what the Lunar New Year stamps will look like. I like being on the forefront of most postage stamp releases, really. The art depicts kumquats, which are apparently eaten for luck and given as special gifts during the new year celebration.

So, Since the year symbolizes diplomacy and is a good year for negotiations, maybe we should all write some letters of hope, of worldly wishes and a more peaceful lifestyle and send them on a full moon – it will change the world! Is that wildly ambitious?

Love out loud, this is my ode to Valentine’s Day. Here’s to all the folks I know who have followed their heart. In the face of adversity, when everyone said it couldn’t be done, when the chips were down, they still said bet it all. Cheers to you all, because you have inspired me. Now I’m no gambler, but I know when you pour your heart into something, and you take a chance, something incredible happens.

Two things I have happened upon in the past week:

What Oprah knows for sure: There is no greater gift you can give or receive than to honor your calling. It’s why you were born. And how you become most truly alive. My friend, Ali, creator of the Makerie posted this. It is so her to find these snippets of inspiration and then really take them to heart. I just love her spirit and belief in what she is doing.
Ben Stein Says Happiness Comes to Those Who Pursue Careers That Define Their Passions – Ask His Shrink! Follow Your Heart, Risk Be Damned. My husband, who is not known to be a risk-taker, sent me this. Because he believes in me. And to have supporters when the going gets tough, means everything.

My friends, Shannon & Sahra, of Hot Mama Designs are wonder twins! I remember a lifetime ago, helping Shannon on afternoons when I played hooky from my boring, uneventful, meaningless corporate job with her branding & business development. We called them board meetings. We didn’t really know what we were doing, but we believed in it and it had heart. Finding Sahra was quite serendipitous and they have taken their combined passion to whole new levels {see jewelry design above} – you go girls!

It’s not an easy road, but a rewarding one, … I speak from experience. Lucky for me, the list of inspiring folks in my life goes on and on. I am honored to personally interact with those who give themselves to their passions everyday:

I am incessantly in awe. May all beings fall in truly. madly. deeply. in love with something amazing and follow it with your heart to the ends of the earth.

The Heritage Handmade Calendar has brought so much joy and opportunity to the BirdDog Press since it’s creation in collaboration with WonderBound Press. The rewards just keep coming! I am happy to announce yet one more connection this collection of days carefully pressed on paper has given me – Black Cat Farm~Table~Bistro. They are a picture of exactly what the calendar set out to celebrate. Eric and Jill Skokan are a treat to work with. They have cultivated an inspirational 70-acre farm in Boulder with heritage breed pigs, sheep and chickens, as well as row after row of organic heirloom vegetables which they tend to with full heart and soul and serve in their 13th Street Boulder restaurant.

Today, they are cooking at the James Beard House in New York, having been invited for another event after last year’s debut. Just this past Thursday, my husband and I had the pleasure of cozying up on one of their plush leather loveseats for a tasting of what will be offered tonight in the Big Apple. Paired with wine, each course was an experience to discover, reflect and savor. The vibe of the restaurant, the care that goes into each morsel of flavor and knowing that each bite could be traced to local origins right down to the very root it came from made me feel almost a celebrity status.
